Angel Daniels grew up hard, one step ahead of the law and always looking over his shoulder. A grifter's son, he'd learned every con and trick in the book but ached for a normal life. Once out on his own, Angel returns to Half Moon Bay where he once found...and then lost...love.

Now, Angel's life is a frantic mess of schedules and chaos. Between running his bakery and raising his troubled 11-year-old half-brother, Roman, Angel has a hectic but happy life. Then West Harris returns to Half Moon Bay and threatens to break Angel all over again by taking away the only home he and Roman ever had.

When they were young, Angel taught West how to love and laugh, but when Angel moved on, West locked his heart up and threw away the key. Older and hardened, West returns to Half Moon Bay and finds himself face-to-face with the man he'd lost. Now West is torn between killing Angel or holding him tight.

But rekindling their passionate relationship is jeopardized as someone wants one or both of them dead, and as the terrifying danger mounts, neither man knows if the menace will bring them together or forever tear them apart.

Hanging the Stars Half Moon Bay Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Rhys Ford Greg Tremblay Dreamspinner Press LLC Books

Angel Daniels just wants to run his thriving little bakery in Half Moon Bay, and to take care of his eleven-year-old brother, Roman.

Too bad people keep trying to destroy the place.

Weston Harris has a similar problem. Having been left at his beach house in Half Moon Bay after what looks like an assassination attempt, all he wants is to be left alone to nurse his aches and pains.

And then the lost love of his life shows up with a pizza.

Ms. Ford does like her violence. It is a signature of her Sinner’s Gin series as well. I will say, it keeps you turning the pages. I find the violence jarring, and exhausting, but by using it Ford catches tough men at their most vulnerable. Ford makes grown men cry, and I like that in a writer.

A run-down strip mall seems an odd place to set a romance, and yet it works. Weston Harris and Angel Daniels have a history, and all the violence they’ve suffered seems to break down a decade’s absence and bring all their seething emotions to the surface.

This ties to the first book of the Half Moon Bay series through Deacon and his niece Zig, who is still working in the same strip mall, and is married West’s twin brother Lang. This solid family serves as an anchor to the volatile plot. I particularly liked Angel’s little brother Roman. Scared children and puppies in danger are always a good way to keep your reader on the edge of their seat.

Hanging the Stars Half Moon Bay Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Rhys Ford Greg Tremblay Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

This was a really good second book in the series. My main issue with the story was the author never addressed the who or why the accident happened and the shooting at West. If she explained the why and who I missed it. The story felt a little rushed to get thru. Also in the first book Fishstick Friday didn't West drive and park in front of the auto repair shop? So the not being able to drive in this book made no sense to me. Still a good story.
After reading #1, I had to read #2 to find out about Lang's twin brother West. I loved (and sometimes hated) how messy everything is. I loved Angel, and Roman.

I'm giving this one 4 stars instead of 5 because there was, for me, too much imagery digression than is Ford's usual, to the point where I skimmed to find out what happens next. This one hit my personal tipping point three or four times. The most annoying one was during a tense scene. Bad form, that. Why go to the trouble of adding words if it annoys readers? Well, this reader, anyway.
The tone of this novel invoked by the lovely writing was just what I needed after a frenetic month. The book grabbed me at the start and pulled me along by connection I felt with the characters. The story starts off with a bang and continues at a fast pace. The writing and the charming characters blended well with the fast pace. I love Rhys Ford's quirky and real characters. Definitely a great followup to Fish Stick Fridays.

I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review. So, Honestly, I Loved It. As a further disclaimer, I have liked (and loved many) all of Rhys Fords books, even the quirky one. I have reread all of them up to this book, and I plan to reread this one.
The pictures that Ms. Ford paints with her words brings you right into the scene and makes you right at home. Both characters have their own issues, but I love a good story where the characters aren't perfect. It makes it feel real.

Like a good book without danger and death? You will not be disappointed. Looking for Romance? Yep, this book delivers. You'll spend all the while smiling and enjoying the adventure that's been penned for your enjoyment.

Enjoy it you will. I must admit when I met the evil twin in the first book, I was really interested in seeing what his story was. I wasn't disappointed, and you won't be either.

So, pull up a comfortable chair, and kick off your shoes and cozy up for a well written novel that takes you on a Journey to beautiful Half Moon Bay.

They've left the light on for you.

In this book, a kind-of sequel to "Fish Stick Fridays", we are re-introducecd to West (Lang's identical twin), and thankfully he's not quite the douche that he seemed when we first met him. He's definately stand-offish, and still guards his heart, but we have learned why and he's trying to be better. West and Lang have both been making a concerted effort to become closer as brothers despite their personality differences.
MC # 2 is Angel. He runs a little bakery and is the manager of a local extended-stay motel. When Angel first retunred to Half Moon Bay after an "adventurous" youth (if I say too much it will spoil things) he met West and Lang's grandmother. Grandma hired Angel to manage the motel, and before her death also sold him both the bakery and the parking lot that lies between the bakery and the motel. Angel has made his bakery a modest success, and for the last 2 years has been the legal guardian of his younger brother Roman. Roman is now 11, and was literally dumped on Angel's doorstep by their waste-of-space father.
West and Angel have a personal history, a summer teenage romance more than a decade before. Since Angel and West were from vastly different economic strata and since they both had crap for fathers, you can imagine how well the romance ended (ie - badly, with both carrying pretty bitter scars).
West's company now owns the motel that Angel manages. Grandma's will made her arrangement with Angel ironclad even after her death. West's company would like to tear down the motel, buy Angel out of the bakery, and develop that whole works into condos. Angel is NOT selling the bakery, and as long as he choses to remain at the motel the motel remains as-is.
Here's where it starts getting interesting . West is the victim of a hit-and-run car "accident", and retreats to his house in Half Moon Bay to both hide out and recover. (In a cute scene we learn that Zig has her Uncle West completely wrapped around her little finger, an arrangement that West is 100% in agreement with, even if Lang and Deacon would like the deliberate spoiling to stop). That same morning Angel's bakery was shot up in what appeared to have been some kind of robbery gone wrong. West was named as somebody who may want to see the bakery (along with Angel) leave HMB; Angel was named as somebody who might benefit from West being permanently out of comission. Between past events and the present troubles West and Angel have no reason to trust or even like each other, except for the little detail that neither one ever really got over the other.
The above set-up hooked me in FAST. The rest of the plot you will have to find out for yourself, but suffice it to say WHOO-HOO!!! I finished the book in near-record time, and then just HAD to fire up my text-to-speech app and listen to the book the next day at work.
I haven't read everything Rhys Ford has written, but prior to this book had never been disappointed by one of her works. I am quite happy to say that Rhys Ford still has not disappointed. Thank-you Rhys!!
