Haiku Elvis A Life in 17 Syllables or Less Carlos Colon 9781937905231 Books Reviews
This haiku collection is the next best thing to watching Carlos Colon, a prolific poet from Shreveport, Louisiana, perform as Haiku Elvis. Americans are captivated by celebrities, and Elvis continues to be a major draw, even long after his (alleged) death. There are numerous superficial imitators of Presley, but Carlos Colon takes emulation and identification to the next level, by enlarging the King's inner life.
It is as if Elvis confessed his foibles and insecurities in confidence to each one of us--such as his failure to control his appetites.
Here is a wonderful haiku that parodies Kobayashi Issa's famous poem "O Snail/Climb Mount Fuji/But slowly, slowly!"
diet--
this mountain I climb
slowly, slowly
Haiku Elvis nicely captures the shortcomings and disappointments of fame
less fragrant
than I expected
the sweet smell of success
While modern haiku is often shorter than the 17-syllable (5-7-5) exercises taught in elementary schools, the beauty of the form is that it can capture a world of feeling in a few well-chosen words.
not myself tonight
my belt missing
a rhinestone
Jim Kacian's interview with Colon and his alter ego, Haiku Elvis, is a pleasant bonus at the end of the book. It wouldn't hurt to read the interview first, before dipping into the 68 delightful "one-breath" poems presented in this entertaining and (yes, at times) tender collection.
Haiku Elvis
(may be sung to "Love Me Tender")
Haiku Elvis,
Carlos Colon,
which do you prefer--
introvert or extrovert,
poet or poseur?
Haiku Elvis,
Carlos Colon,
what do you wear now--
jump-suit, rhinestones, blue suede shoes--
are you the cat's meow?
Or are you dressed
in drabber duds,
tell us, Shreveport scribe--
clothes a librarian would don,
with a cautious vibe.
Haiku Elvis,
Carlos Colon,
you with that shook-up look,
listen, your fans, most tender and true,
await your second book.
His Elvis thing is clever, and most of his haiku is right-on, not always stunning but mostly fine.Thank you very much.
For you Elvis fans, add this little jewel to your collection. Carlos Colon is a superb haikuist and a funny fellow.
